Battle Mechanics

Well obviously I looked into the main arch-type of battle/brawler games, while most of the brawlers that I enjoy has elements of RPG.

So I have decided to focus on the main area of Side scroller brawlers as they both contain stylized art and special and sometimes unusual game mechanics.

Soul Calibur V

This game implemented into their own combat system a difference in the combat playing type of each character not just the difference in fighting style but the way the player has to use the character they have chosen.

e.g. Viola depending whether or not she is holding the orb depends on how her attacks will turn out...

e.g. Hilde depending on how long the player holds certain buttons within a combo will change the outcome of the combination. Changing the finisher for her combo.

Persona 3 FES

This game was anime stylized game that implemented many different game mechanics such as the social link system which related both within your characters interaction with the world and combat.

The social link was the system implemented to calculate the relationship player has with other NPC characters which also affected the Persona system as each social link affected major arcana that each of the persona entities were represented.

This meant depending on the characters current social link status it would effect the strength of your persona and therefore effect battle.

Legend of Dragood

The Legend of Dragoon features three modes of play: the field map, a battle mode, and an overworld map. The field map is used whenever the player enters a town, dungeon, or landmark, this impletemented system  was normal for its time period as it was in other games such as Final Fantasy. It consists of a pre-rendered background image overlayed with real-time 3D character models and animated effects, such as the movement of water or light shafts.

Turn-based battles occur between playable characters and CPU-controlled enemies. Standard actions such as attack, defend, item and escape are present. The world map is used when the player moves between towns or other geographical locations. The World Map doesn't allow for free movement, and instead the player follows a guided path between destinations. Another game that folllows this mechanic is Valkyire profile only allowing the player to move within the guided regions.... this add so limitations, but limits confusion.

The Addition system combat system was implemented as a way to make the game more interactive and have the player pay attention unlike in old fashioned turn based battle games. The addition sytsem was also a way to get the player to gain SP which was practically the guage used for this games special transformation called dragoon.

Research Games

At first I chose a wide selection of games that I had exstensive knowledge on.
Going through multiple different game types, but mainly under the RPG game arch-type.
